http://liveearth.org/?p=27

The US show highlights: Dave Matthews, John Mayer, Roger Waters, and The Police
The US show downers (for me): Kelly Clarkson (unless she does that stunning "Waiting for the Worms" duet with Roger)

The UK show highlights: Genesis, given they perform some older material (also hoping that Clapton shows up, he usually does for these things)
The UK show downers: Madonna (yeah, I know she is a true improvisational, jam-based artist, but she's started to sag as of late)

(My 11 year old daughter also thinks the Grateful Dead (token mention of our beloved forum's raison d'etre there!) are indescribably boring - so that's her off the Christmas list this year...)

lmao!!!

Yeah, I would have loved to see The Police back in the olde days, and that's cool that genesis is playing. I would love to get into them, as i have liked all i have heard from them, and from the members who branched out to seek out their solo careers (phil collins and peter gabriel)

Genesis w/Peter Gabriel as a prog rock band = good
Genesis w/Phil Collins at the lead as a pop rock band = barf

Hey - I'll have you know my 11 year old daughter reckons Kelly Clarkson is a class act. (My 11 year old daughter also thinks the Grateful Dead (token mention of our beloved forum's raison d'etre there!) are indescribably boring - so that's her off the Christmas list this year...)

On the whole I reckon your side of the pond's line-up is better than ours. Got to say that Madonna is an act well past her sell by date - not that I ever took to that flavour in the first place. (The stainless steel bra should help with the sag you mention...) I recall seeing the Police way back when (Roxanne had just come out) playing support to Spirit. Sting insisted on reciting dire poetry from the stage, an act that the assembled hairy hordes made plain was not quite what they called rock 'n' roll.

VH1 Classic over here has recently been showing what they call BBC Crown Jewels, old concerts orignally broadcast on BBC many years ago. They recently had a Police concert that was probably taped around the time you saw them, although minus the verbose effluvium that Sting has become so well known for, as they indicated it was before the band took off in the U.S. It was quite good. My favorite, however, is one that featured AC/DC in the Bon Scott days, I think just before or after the release of Highway to Hell. Fantastic stuff. I've always had a soft spot for the wacky boys from down under.

rob,

would have loved to seen the Police, Spirit show. I met randy and Mr Skin a few times in Denver. I really hated to hear he died, but he went in such a noble way.

Does anyone know of any sites with live Spirit?

I'll stand up for Kelly, be cool to she perform some Janis or Grace tunes.

I like Kelly Clarkson as a pop singer more than I like Dave Matthews Band as a Dave Matthews Band.

: )

When you say that Madonna has started to sag as of late, was that a reference to certain body parts?

Oh, I'm sorry, I should have been clearer: her appearance will also celeberate her entrance into the Screen Actors Guild. I'm actually dissapointed that you thought I was referring to something more crass and vulgar. But if I was, hell yes, there's more of her heading south than Ernest Shackelton's entire Antarctic Expedition in 1907.

Maybe I covered this a few weeks ago, but does anybody remember the guy who claimed that Mary Hart from Entertainment Tonight caused him to have seizures? Well, I had to quit playing Kelly Clarkson songs on the radio for the same reason. Seriously.
